Oiling the wheels of the state
by The Economist online
THE Deepwater spill in the Gulf of Mexico is having a profound effect on Louisiana's economy. The state's offshore oil fields are among the largest in America, and its oil and gas industries contribute $30 billion to state coffers each year. Louisianans fear the spill, and the resultant six-month moratorium on offshore drilling, will have the same traumatic effect on the oil business that it is having on fishing and tourism.
