US: Charles Manson energy – by Paul Driessen

“… gleaming white wind turbines generating carbon-free electricity carpet chaparral-covered ridges and march down into valleys of Joshua trees.” This is “the future” of American energy – not “the oil rigs planted helter-skelter in [nearby] citrus groves,” nor the “smoggy San Joaquin Valley” a few miles away.

US: Our Constitution Is The Best Model A Country Could Have – Investors.com

Our Constitution is no longer respected as it once was. Nations writing new constitutions don’t see it as the prototype to be followed. All have something in common with our president.

US: Plutocrat Dems attack Romney as ‘Richie Rich’ – by Ann Coulter

Having given up on pillorying Mitt Romney for plundering his way to vast wealth — because, unfortunately, it isn’t true — the NFM (Non-Fox Media) seem to have settled on denouncing him as a rich jerk.

Postwar Rent Controls Mises Daily: by Robert L. Scheuttinger and Eamonn F. Butler

The rent that a landlord charges for his accommodation is merely an instance of a price for a commodity, like all other prices for all other commodities. And like all other prices and all other commodities, rents have been a prime target for government restrictions. The postwar experience with rent control has been particularly revealing in regard to the adequacy of controls in general.

The Fed's Quasi-Fiscal Policies Mises Daily: by David Howden

2007 are a sharp departure from the old way of performing monetary policy. In fact, it is difficult to state that the Fed is any longer in the business of traditional monetary policy — understood in the United States as aiming for low inflation and smoothed output volatility. A new breed of monetary policies better referred to as "quasi-fiscal" policies has become the norm.

Time Is Money: Capital and Interest Mises Daily: by Eugen-Maria Schulak and Herbert Unterköfler

Time Is Money
The up-and-coming Austrian School received support from abroad even during the Methodenstreit. Léon Walras mentioned already well-known supporters of the new value theory from among the Romance countries in the preface to his Théorie de la monnaie (1886). In English publications, the subjectivist theory of value was gaining increased acceptance as well (cf. Böhm-Bawerk 1889b). The fact alone that it had been discovered at almost the same time by three authors (Walras, Menger, and Jevons) was considered by Böhm-Bawerk to be substantive evidence of its veracity (Böhm-Bawerk 1891/1930, p. 132 n. 1). In contrast, Gustav Cohn (1840–1919), an advocate of the Historical School, interpreted this brisk publishing activity to mean that the discovery of the marginal utility constituted a "meager morsel" that would have to be shared by "a number of like-minded discoverers" (Cohn 1889, p. 23).

Will Currency Devaluation Fix the Eurozone? Mises Daily: by Frank Shostak

Roubini said in Davos, Switzerland, on January 25, 2012, that tight policies are making the recession in the eurozone worse. According to Roubini what Europe needs is less austerity and more growth. In particular, the NYU professor is concerned about the deep recession in the eurozone's peripheral countries: Spain, Portugal, Greece — all are on a strict regime of austerity. For instance, in Spain the yearly rate of growth of government outlays stood at minus 12.4 percent in November against minus 15.7 percent in the month before. In Portugal the yearly rate of growth stood at minus 3.6 percent in December against minus 2.5 percent in November. In Greece the yearly rate of growth fell to 2.9 percent in December from 6.2 percent in the prior month.

A visible tightening is also observed in the two major European economies of Germany and France. Year-on-year government outlays in Germany stood at minus 1.6 percent in November versus minus 1.7 percent in October. In France the yearly rate of growth stood at minus 12.4 percent in November against minus 12.3 percent in the prior month.

Iran Man

Rick Santorum says he's been studying Iran for a decade. But does he know what he's talking about?

BY URI FRIEDMAN

Rick Santorum, who wrested some momentum from Mitt Romney this week by winning primary contests in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri, likes to cast himself as something of an expert on Iran, which has arguably become the top foreign-policy issue in the campaign. From making clear that he'd take care of Iran's nuclear problem if Tehran refuses to do so to warning of jihadists lurking in the Gulf of Mexico -- he's not shy about his obsession with the Iranian threat, or his hawkish stance.

We're All State Capitalists Now

The debate about whether America or China will ultimately triumph is a red herring that distracts us from the real contest of our time.

BY NIALL FERGUSON

If there is one issue on which the rival candidates for the U.S. presidency agree, it's that America's global leadership will endure. Mitt Romney insists it is not a "post-American century," while Barack Obama declared in his State of the Union address that "anyone who tells you otherwise, anyone who tells you that America is in decline or that our influence has waned, doesn't know what they're talking about."

US Urged ‘Restraint’ in Bahrain After Sending Arms to the Dictatorship

The Obama administration has kept up support for Bahrain's repression despite international condemnation

by John Glaser

The Obama administration on Thursday urged the Bahraini government and pro-reform protesters to exercise restraint ahead of next week’s anniversary of the February 14 uprisings last year.
“The days and weeks surrounding the anniversary are a moment for all Bahrainis in all segments of society to come together to move beyond the pain of last year and begin to forge a more peaceful, prosperous future through genuine dialogue,” Michael Posner, U.S. assistant secretary of said on Thursday.

NATO Air Strike Kills Eight Children in Afghanistan

Karzai Announces 'All-Out Probe' of Killings

by Jason Ditz

At least eight Afghan children were killed today in Kapisa Province as the result of a NATO air strike against the Nejrab District. The attack was condemned by the Karzai government.
NATO would only “confirm there has been a situation,” while promising to send a “joint NATO assessment team” to find out exactly what happened and how. So far the nationality of the warplane has not been identified.
The details of the attack are not entirely clear. Kapisa Governor Mehrabuddin Safi said the strike hit the Giawa village, and other officials said there may have been a night raid in the area shortly before the strike.
Karzai has deployed his own team to the district to investigate the killings, promising a “all-out probe” in a statement released earlier today. A number of MPs are part of the delegation being sent, and it is just one more in a long line of embarrassing incidents straining Afghan-NATO ties.

Harsher IAEA Report on Iranian Nuclear Program Expected Next Month

Leaked statements claim the report will allege an Iranian effort to develop a nuclear warhead for a ground-to-ground missile

by John Glaser

A follow-up report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran’s nuclear program will be published next month and is expected to be harsher than the last one, which the IAEA released in November.
The last IAEA report cobbled together old and questionable intelligence and rose unfounded concerns about a possible military dimension to Iran’s nuclear program. This became the primary basis imposing even harsher international sanctions against Iran targeting their financial and oil sectors, measures which have had harmful effects on the Iranian population.

US Officials: Israel Works With Terror Group to Kill Iranian Scientists

The Mujahedeen e-Khalq is being trained, armed, and funded by Israel to carry out terrorist attacks on Iran

by John Glaser

Israel has financed, trained, and armed Iranian dissident groups in order to carry out terrorist attacks on Iranian soil, according to top U.S. officials.
The group, Mujahedeen e-Khalq (MEK), is designated as a terrorist group by the United States and is accused of carrying out terrorist attacks in the past, including on American citizens. With the help of Israel, MEK has carried out five assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists since 2007 and may have a missile research and development site.
